It seems like celebrity scandals are becoming more and more common these days. In just the past 10 years, we have seen some of the biggest scandals to ever hit Hollywood. Some of these scandals have rocked the entertainment world to its core, while others have been blown out of proportion by the media. Let’s take a look at some of the most infamous celebrity scandals from the past decade!
Britney Spears’s Conservatorship
In 2008, Britney Spears was placed under a conservatorship after she had a very public breakdown. This meant that her father would have control over her finances and personal life. As recently as 2019, however, she spoke out in court and said that she wanted to end the conservatorship, claiming that her father was abusing his role as conservator. “This conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good,” Spears said. Britney Spears was released from her conservatorship in 2021 after a short-lived court hearing in Los Angeles County Superior Court, ending the 13-year arrangement.
Euphoria Star Chloe Cherry (Faye)
The HBO sensation that is Euphoria, first roared onto our screens in 2019, bringing with it the turbulent character Faye portrayed by Chloe Cherry in season 2. But what many probably don’t know about this budding American actor is that she first got her start back in 2015 when she signed with a prominent adult model escort agency. She would eventually star in over 200 adult films before making her official acting debut in Euphoria in 2022.
Kanye West’s TMZ speech
In 2018, Kanye West made headlines when he went on a rant during an interview with TMZ. He said that slavery was “a choice”.
“When you hear about slavery for 400 years … for 400 years? That sounds like a choice,” West said. “
One TMZ employee, however, was quick to challenge Kanye on his point of view, saying:
“…you’re entitled to your opinion. You’re entitled to believe whatever you want. But there is fact, and real-world, real-life consequence behind everything that you just said…Frankly, I’m disappointed, I’m appalled and, brother, I am unbelievably hurt by the fact that you have morphed into something, to me, that’s not real.” Other celebrities like Spike Lee promptly took to social media to divvy out similar rebuke for Kanye’s comments.
Harvey Weinstein’s Sexual Assault Scandal
In 2017, dozens of women came forward and accused Harvey Weinstein, a prominent Hollywood film producer, of sexual assault and harassment. This led to him being fired from his own company, arrested, and also acted as a major catalyst in growing the #MeToo movement inspiring widespread condemnation of sexual assault and harassment in the workplace. Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020.
